Nose Work - Scent Skills
What is “Nose Work”?
Nose Work is a fun, detection-style sport designed to develop dogs’ natural scenting abilities by using their curiosity, desire to hunt, and their love of toys, food, and exercise. It’s a great way for any dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy.
What it’s Not!
This is a sport and is not intended to be a professional detection dog training course. Through the levels of this course your dog will learn to seek out pre-identified essential oil scents which are used in the official trials.
Who can participate?
Just about EVERYONE! This activity is great for young and old, active and mellow. The structure of the class allows for one dog working at a time with rotation through all of the students. Dogs do not have to see or interact with others so it can be a great activity for shy/nervous dogs as well as dogs that may have space/reactivity issues around other dogs.
No obedience skills are necessary to participate which makes this a fun, positive activity for handlers that either haven’t started working on manners or those having some challenges that want a fun outlet for active dogs that may help with focus.
