“We are the Instructors, YOU are the teacher!”
How many weeks are the classes and what is the cost?
Classes meet once a week for 6 weeks, unless otherwise noted. During each class you are given homework to practice during the week. Classes are about an hour long and every session is full of practical lessons that you can immediately put to use. The regular 6 week classes are $120 for new students and $110 for returning students. Special workshops and other events vary in fees.
How big are the classes?
Most classes are limited to 8 dog/handler teams. This allows us to get to know you and your dog to support you better in your training program.
Why don’t dogs attend the first class of Puppy I and Beginning I since it’s a ‘dog training’ class?
The handlers are a key part of the training program and we’ve found that having one class to focus on the human part of the team allows the entire set to be more successful. At the end of the lecture class you will have homework so you can start training right away and be prepared for the excitement of the second class.
Can multiple handlers come to class with a dog?
Yes, everyone in the household that will be interacting with the dog is welcome to attend but only one person will be out on the floor at a time with the dog. Handlers may swap out during the class and it can be very helpful to watch, listen & learn from the sidelines.
Can children come to class?
Children may come to class but they must be able to sit quietly and not be disruptive to the class. Very young children often have a difficult time sitting still for an hour. This is special time with your dog so you may want to consider a babysitter on class days.
Children 12 and older may handle a dog in class if they are able and have a parents support to jump in and help. Timing & consistency are very important when training and can be difficult for children. We generally recommend that parents start the training process and include the children once the dog has a basic understanding of the behavior.
If I miss a class can I make it up?
Because of the class size limits and schedules it is not easy to fit students in for a make-up class. If you know in advance that you will miss a class let the instructor know and you can receive the weekly homework in advance. If you miss a class unexpectedly we can e-mail the homework to you.
Do you allow aggressive dogs in class?
If you have concerns about unsafe behavior with your dog please contact us prior to signing up for class. Sometimes behavior seen as ‘aggressive’ comes from over excitement or frustration rather than true aggression. Your dog can be evaluated prior to attending class and we can provide alternatives of private training or other local resources to help you work on the issues. Our goal is to find the best options for all students while maintaining safety and a productive environment. Sometimes a group class is not the right option to start with but other training options will be available.
What should I do if my dog comes in season or seems ill?
Your dog should not attend class if in season or if you have concerns about health. The handler can attend class without the dog to learn the exercises and get homework to practice at home.
